Grass-fed Beef
In founding our herd, we searched the southeast for animals that had the genetics to grow well on our local forages without supplementation. Our current herd consists of Red Angus and Sim Angus cows that came from herds that were grown on grass and heifers we have raised ourselves. We take pride in our all-natural, grass-fed, pasture-raised system. By allowing the animals to live as nature intended, freely grazing on lush pastures with minimal handling by us, our cows are naturally healthier and stress free.
The herd sire of most of our current calves and growers is a registered SimAngus bull and we are enjoying his calves. Initially, our feeder calves were all grown from birth to finish on our pastures. For those calves, we practiced humane weaning and our feeders spent all of their lives in the primary herd or grazing with the finishing herd. In 2020 we began purchasing a few weaned calves from known local breeders with practices like ours and growing them with our calves for 18 months to two years. In 2021, we made the decision to sell our cow herd and strictly feed out calves that we purchase locally from other breeders and grow out for the 18 months to two years it takes them to be ready for processing. This allows us to better practice rotational grazing in our pasture setup. We will begin processing these calves in 2023.
The advantages of grass fed beef are numerous. Grass-fed beef is not only leaner and more flavorful than grain-fed beef; it is also more nutritious. Naturally higher in Omega 3 fatty acids, CLA’s, and Vitamin E, grass- fed beef is a healthful choice in your diet.
